The “Posse Grounds” boat ramp is located behind the Redding Convention Center or better known as the Redding Civic Auditorium. The Posse Grounds gets the name dating back to 1939 when local Police Chief John Balma created, upon order from President Roosevelt, the “Sheriff’s Posse”. It’s possible the “Sheriff’s Posse” rode around on horses, not sure, but we do know the current location is next to the Redding Rodeo Grounds and if it wasn’t for a small-time amateur rodeo out of neighboring Anderson California back in 1948 that moved to Redding, what was then a gravel and scrap dump from the construction of Shasta Dam would not have been converted into a horse boarding and rodeo facility. The area became known as the Sheriff’s Posse Grounds as the City of Redding granted the “Posse” with a 99-year lease where they could host a world-famous Rodeo.
The Posse Grounds has plenty of parking. Access to the boat ramp is straightforward. Expect a semi social atmosphere in the mornings as fishing guides from a selection of local outfitters congregate on the boat launch.
