March and April are two of he best months to fish the Lower Sacramento River in Redding CA and this year, 2021, the “Lower Sac” isn’t disappointing!
Spring on the Lower Sacramento River – 2021
With steelhead season on the Trinity River coming to a close and spring trout on the Lower Sacramento kicking into full gear, I’m getting excited for one of my favorite times of the year. Fly fishing the Lower Sacramento River! The “Lower Sac” is definitely in my top 3 rivers to fish.
Because Spring Time! First the weather is starting to warm up and bugs are staring to hatch, rainbows are migrating, coming out of deeper water, moving to the upper river in Redding were they spawn. With the abundance of mayflies, caddis hatches, he rainbows of the Lower Sac eat “all day”. The fishing is always great!
Anglers will experience different mayfly and caddis hatches throughout most of the day (10:00 AM ~ 3:00 PM). Egg patterns in orange can work as well this time of year. Bring your 5/6 wt fly rods and expect to get bent.
Second it’s a good time to get out and and learn new tricks about the Lower Sacramento in spring time, about how to anticipate rather it being bug hatches to match the hatch, learning new casting techniques, the hydraulics and flows of the river, spots where us guides like to fish, or how to row a boat.
For whatever reason, we can definitely love to share our experiences.
Third reason is the weather is so perfect and comfortable for all ages of anglers from March through May (Mostly!) There is nothing like getting out on the drift boat in 70 degree weather casting your fly rod, hooking up to some of the hands down funnest, head shaking, acrobatic Lower Sacramento Rainbows, and on top of that throwing back a couple cold ones or maybe for the kids some Cheetos and soda in a beautiful relaxing environment!
